Fox Bros. Electric Motor Service was started in October of 1968. Brothers Russell and James Fox started repairing and rewinding motors in James' garage. Russell's wife, Barbara kept the books. Russell and James were electricians by trade, but they wanted to have their own business. At that time there wasn't a motor repair shop in Murfreesboro.
Russell spoke to a friend about renting space in his building in Murfreesboro, on West College Street. The friend offered to build an addition on to his present building for them to rent. A deal was struck and in a few months they opened to the public at 861 West College Street, where they have been for 38 years.
In a few years they were cramped for space and they had an addition added that had a full basement and doubled their size. They purchased the building and in a few more years added on again.
James retired at 62 because of bad health and Russell and Barbara bought his half of the business. It now operates as Fox Bros. Electric Motor Service, LLC.
Fox Bros. has always been a family business. Russell and Barbara have three daughters: Debbie (has worked in the business as office manager and book keeping for 28 years), Cindy (worked during her college years), and Melanie (worked during her Junior year of high school), and a son, John, (has worked in the business for ten years). Two of James' sons worked there too; Jim and Rick. Barbara's sister, Gayle has been with the company taking care of billing for the electrical contracting for 16 years.
In February of 2002, Russell was diagnosed with cancer. With the help and loyalty of his employees he worked until he wasn't able. In June of 2004 Russell died, leaving his wife, Barbara, to carry on. Service, Integrity, and Quality is still the motto, just as it was when Russell was alive.
